More and more men are now beginning to practice yoga, but quite a few are still skeptical because of the mythology related or the cultural stigma (it's only for girls). It's important for you to really understand what yoga is all about.
Yoga is quite similar to physical exercises- you will find a wide range of benefits from it. So guys if you think that it will not give you a cardiovascular workout then you are mistaken. Men's Fitness magazines reported that it can help in-
Relaxing the mind and the body
Yoga unplugs you from the stress and detoxicates your mind and body with the breathing exercises (pranayama). They activate the parasympathetic nervous system which lowers the level of cholesterol that makes our body fat.
Boost stability and balance
In yoga postures, one has to balance in a single leg, arm or bend forward with the split stance. This improves postural balance and strengthens the core.
Make you more flexible
Most of the asans include one or more spinal twist that loosens the joints that make up the spine. This increases nutrient delivery, blood flow, improves the digestion and promotes detoxification.
Prevent injuries
Over tight muscles are at higher risk of injuries and strains which makes it extremely important to maintain the flexibility of muscle tissues. Moreover, well-stretched yoga muscle will recover and heal easily from strains.
Build muscle
It gives access to more muscle fibers- the twisting postures help to tone the midsection and the standing postures build powerful legs. The posture on which you have to bear your own weight helps to strengthen the arm and upper body portion. So it will give you a total body workout.
Some postures for you
Tree Posture
Tree posture or Vrksasana is a great posture for balance and stability, it strengthens the muscles in the ankles, calves and thighs In addition to this, it also strengthens the inner thighs and groin muscles.
How to do?
Put your weight on the right leg and place the sole of your left foot on the inner right thigh. If you find it difficult then put the sole on the inner calf but not on the knee. Fold your hand and bring them in front of your chest and keep your hips parallel to the room. After some time, release your foot and repeat on the other side.
Facing dog
Facing dog or Adho Mukha Svanasana is another pose of the sun salutation sequence. This helps in strengthening the legs and arms, it stretches the calves, hand, shoulders and wrist.
How to do?
Place your hand in front of your shoulders and knees below your hips. Press your hand on the floor and as you exhale lift your knees above the floor. Lengthen your spine by stretching your Tailbone to the ceiling. Straighten your legs and press your heels down towards the heels. Lift the hips, tailbone and chest downwards in a V position. Try to make a gentle effort to lift the tailbone with a deeper stretch.
Boat Pose
Boat pose or Navasana strengthens the core, hip flexors and spine, this posture is great for men as it stimulates the prostate gland and aids in the digestive system.
How to do?
Lay back with your arms by your side, inhale and lift both the legs out of the mat. You can bend your legs or straighten them up to increase the challenge. Lift the upper part of the body, leading the chest and reach your arms skyward. Maintain the position for some time and try to keep your spine straight.
Last Note:
Yoga has a great mind-body connection, you will feel great its class. The asans release the essential hormone that promotes the feeling of well being and happiness. So buy a mat and join a yoga class to stay fit and healthy.
