THE FOOLPROOF GEAR FOR YOUR FALL CAMPING

THE FOOLPROOF GEAR FOR YOUR FALL CAMPING

It's the time of that year again.

The weather may be a lot cooler, and you are thinking of opting out of camping. Those who have camped in the fall never stopped the ritual of camping every fall because they were able to easily enjoy steamy fall scenery, and explore the world of the outdoors. You too can. You can stare at the star-filled nights even in the cold, and you wouldn't be uncomfortable. All you need to do is grab the following gears.

    1. Get A Sleeping Bag Designed For The Cold Weather.

There are sleeping bags in the market that are built to protect one against low temperature like 0-30 degrees F. This will help ward off cold. You can also procure two sleeping bags, or you can opt for the mummy sleeping bags.

  1. Get Your Equipment Tested

Before you head to the camp with your gear, it is important that you test them for functionality at home. You can easily get your tent set up in the backyard to ensure it is working.

    1. Buy A Good Tent

Do not opt for a tent because it is cheap, and ignore its functionality. Procure a great three-season tent. You should get a full rain fly to prevent moisture from seeping in and get a tent footprint or tarp to ward off moisture too. Getting an additional tarp won't be a bad idea.

    1. Go with your sleeping pads.

The sleeping pads are great if you want to get your body insulated from the cold earth. You can procure a great closed-cell pad, at the store. It will help you retain heat and be warm.

  1. Go camping with a clothing mix for the purpose of layering.

Layering allows you to be comfortable as you camp in the fall. Go camping with a layer of clothes that are both water-resistant and breathable. You could go with synthetic materials, as well as fleece and wool to keep you both dry and warm. Do not go with cotton clothing because they are known to absorb water easily.

Some essential clothing that you should go with include:

  • underwear that is moisture repellant. The underwear should not absorb moisture easily like cotton
  • a wool sweater, or a fleece one, or one made from synthetic materials that can warm you up
  • a water and wind resistant jacket
  • a winter cap to use while sleeping or in the day
  • more than one pair of mittens or gloves.
  1. Get set for the rain by getting yourself a backpack that comes with a rain cover. Come with plastic garbage bags to ward off moisture, and protect your gadgets from water.

You can also come with watertight containers.

  1. Don't forget to go camping with a sunscreen and insect repellant.

  1. If you can, carry your pile of woods to camp because dried firewood becomes rare in autumn.

What You Should Be Eating When Preparing For A Marathon Race

What You Should Be Eating When Preparing For A Marathon Race

Diets might be an option for the average person on the street, but for an athlete or runner who knows his/her worth, a good diet is everything. Runners, especially endurance runners need to be especially fit and healthy at all times. Running is a good way to get some exercise and it is also good to optimize for performance by eating a good and healthy diet. Eating the right food will help prepare you for running a race.

So, what kinds of foods are actually great for a runner? What does a marathon runner need to eat in order to be in good shape and be prepared for the race? It’s all about the individual runner sometimes. But at the end of the day, everyone seeks to optimize the body for their races.

Factors that affect a runner’s diet

These factors may vary from individual to individual. But these are the basic standards to consider when building a meal plan or shopping for runner’s food.

  1. Body type
  2. Distance to be run
  3. Intensity
  4. Experience

After considering all these factors, you can go on to get the right food for you. Remember to enjoy your food and make provisions to be consistent with satisfying your meal requirements.

What to Eat

As a runner or marathon runner, your diet plans, meals or food should have been in tandem with your training regime. You are allowed to eat a lot, if you burn lots of calories during training, a refuel is usually required.

Most runners binge on food supplements that might not meet all their needs well enough. Running is an intense sport that burns up calories fast. But when you supply your body with basic supplements, you miss out on all those wonderful extras involved there-in.  The goodness of fresh whole foods should never be traded up for supplements. Here are some basic whole foods that work great for runners.

What you should eat when preparing for a marathon run.

  1. Oatmeal: This super-light, filling food is a great way to get started in the morning.
  2. Seeds: Nuts, beans, grains, peas are all power-packed health boosters. Being that they are little packets of nourishment to the new plants they are becoming, seeds are unquestionably healthy. Asides essential fats and proteins, plants seeds also contain phenolic and ferulic acid. People who eat lots of whole grain and fruits suffer fewer issues of high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
  3. Fruits and vegetables: The various colors of fruits and vegetables come with their own benefits. Indulge in some colorful plates of veggies and fruits to get calorie-low goodness on the go.
  4. Unpeeled plant skins: Resist the urge to peel the skin off those apples, and please don’t shave off the cucumbers. The skin of these fruits and veggies are a big power house of their own.
  5. Dairy: As much as you might like to go vegan, it would most definitely affect your stamina. Dairy products should not be supplemented by soy or other such options. Calcium for strong bones, protein for bulkier muscles are products of milk.
  6. Sea food: Real omega 3 gurus come from beneath the water. Lower depression rates, lower risk of heart disease and others are enough reasons to indulge.
  7. Meats: Lean meats, poultry, eggs and dairy are all great options for refueling your protein lag. They are also rich in iron and zinc which are very important in a runner’s diet since iron is necessary for blood cells formation. Zinc also happens to help build the immune system. Meats are the best source of these minerals.

Well we do hope you can indulge in some of these meals to boost your diet and attain the necessary health and stamina for your races. All the best and good luck with your race!

5 Easy Tips For Beginner Runners

5 Easy Tips For Beginner Runners

When you are first starting out as a runner, it’s helpful to know some of the best practices of more experienced runners. Whether it is knowing the right type of running gear to buy, or simply how to stay motivated ahead of your first race, the following tips for beginner runners will help guide you.

Tip #1: Stretch both before and after a run

Most people know that it’s important to stretch before a run, especially if you have not been physically active for a long time. Stretching helps to minimize the risk that you will experience any type of injury during your run and improves overall flexibility. But did you know that it’s also important to stretch after a run? Stretching helps to restore muscles to their original size, and also speeds up the recovery process. Experienced runners advise making stretching part of your cool-down process.

Tip #2: Wear the right shoes

If you are a casual runner, it might be tempting to go out for a run wearing whatever pair of sneakers you happen to have around the house. However, there’s a big difference between a “sneaker” and a “running shoe.” A “running shoe” has special cushioning and stability support that is specifically designed to protect your foot. Moreover, you can go one step further – you can also buy a running shoe that compensates for the specific type of movement (such as overpronation or supination) that your foot makes when it strikes a surface.

Tip #3: Start off with a run/walk combo

There’s nothing wrong with building up your pace and stamina by combining both running and walking into the same workout. For example, you might run for 2K and then walk for a few minutes, and then run another 2K. Your goal should be to build up enough strength and endurance to turn every workout into a run.

Tip #4: Stay motivated by running with others

There’s always something you can learn from more experienced runners, and that’s one great benefit of finding a group of local runners. Plus, the benefits extend beyond just learning and education – it’s also a lot more motivating when you are running with others. Especially if you are training for an upcoming race, knowing that you are going out for a run with others also training for the same race can be a huge motivational boost.

Tip #5: Don’t forget about other forms of exercise

There is significant benefit in complementing your running with other forms of exercise. In other words, just because you have committed to running several times a week doesn’t mean that you should forget about other forms of exercise, such as strength training, yoga or swimming. In many ways, it depends on your overall fitness and wellness goals. But it is common to combine the toning and endurance of running with the muscle building of strength training.

**

And, finally, one more bonus tip – don’t forget about the importance of sleep. Sleep is what helps you recover more quickly and avoid injury due to muscle inflammation. So make sure that you are giving your body plenty of sleep as you develop your running regimen. By doing so, you will help to ensure that you will meet all of your future running goals.

How To Become a Zen Trail Runner

How To Become a Zen Trail Runner

While part of the fun and excitement of trail running is getting into better physical shape, there’s also a lot to be said about the Zen of trail running. In other words, spending a few hours in the woods or in the mountains can do a lot to clear your head and relieve any stress or anxiety in your life. So how, exactly, do you become a Zen trail runner?

In many ways, it all starts with getting the right gear. Yes, you can go trail running in the same shoes that you use for regular running on roads and asphalt surfaces. However, the more time that you spend in the outdoors, the more you will realize that you need special trail shoes that have stronger, more protective soles and that are designed for greater stability. In the woods, it’s too easy to trip or fall, given the potential obstacles in your path and the uneven surfaces.

As a rule of thumb, all of the below should be considered “must-haves” for any serious trail runner:

  • Rugged clothing that stands up to dirt (in other words, no $100 T-shirts)
  • Trail shoes
  • Waterproof running socks
  • Water bottle
  • Insect repellent or bug spray
  • Headlamp or flashlight (if you plan on running at night)
  • Ice spikes or crampons (if running in ice or snow)

That’s the equipment that you’ll need, but what about equipment that you will no longer need? If you really plan on becoming a Zen trail runner, you’ll need to ditch all of your digital devices. Leave your GPS device at home, skip the music player or headphones, and forget about fitness bands and Apple Watches. Your goal is to become one with nature, and to forget about the world around you. That’s hard to do if you’re constantly getting beeps, reminders and updates from your digital devices.

Now that you’re all set with the right equipment (or lack thereof), it’s time to make a few strategic changes in the way that you run. Become a Zen trail runner is about far more than just WHERE you run – it’s also about HOW you run. With that in mind, you’ll want to integrate the following changes into your trail running routine:

  • Shorten your stride – You should focus on running about 20 percent slower on trails than on roads.

  • Walk the hills – You will need to conserve your energy, and there’s nothing wrong with walking steep hills on the way up and then running on the way down.

  • Constantly scan 5 to 10 feet ahead of you at all times – You never know when you will encounter a rock, a tree stump, or root.

  • Always step over, not on, obstacles in your trail path – It might sound unexciting to step over giant tree stumps or other obstacles rather than climbing on top of them, but the rule of thumb is to avoid any potentially slippery surfaces.

  • Keep a first-aid kit in your car – You never know what might happen in the woods, and if you get scratched up or fall, you will want a first-aid kit to fix things up.

By keeping all this in mind, you will be well on your way to becoming a Zen trail runner. And remember – you are never alone once you commit to a lifetime of trail running. There are many local trail running groups, as well as area meetups for trail enthusiasts. Especially for beginners, it might make sense to find a running buddy until you become fully familiar with the local terrain.

The Top 10 Canadian Ultra Races in 2018

The Top 10 Canadian Ultra Races in 2018

The Top 10 Canadian Trail Running Races

Whether you are an experienced trail runner or just a beginner, there are many trail races across Canada every year that range in length, difficulty and terrain. While the three most popular locations for these trail races are Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec, some of the “must-run” ultra marathon trail races are in places that you wouldn’t expect – such as along the Yukon River in Yukon Territory. Here’s a closer look at 10 of the best Canadian ultramarathon trail races.

#1: Beaver Flat 50

Date: September 15, 2018

Location: Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park

What makes the Beaver Flat 50 so noteworthy is the terrain – it takes place on the Canadian Prairie. But just because it takes place on flatlands doesn’t mean that the race itself is flat. In fact, the race organizers refer to this challenging race as a “hilly hard-as-hell trail run.” There are over 2,300 meters of elevation gain over a 50K distance. And it gets better than that – the race takes place along very narrow animal trails, where you’re likely to encounter everything from rocks and sand to cacti and bushes. In addition to the 50K version of the race, there are also 5K, 10K and 20K versions.

#2: Tour du Lac Brome

Date: June 15-17, 2018

Location: Knowlton, Quebec

#2: Tour du Lac Brome Canadian Ultra Marathon

This Canadian favorite recently celebrated its 40th year, making it one of the nation’s oldest and most respected races. Every year, several thousand participants from around the nation arrive in Quebec for this challenging race, which takes place just about an hour from the center of Montreal. Everything about this race seems to be pet-friendly and family-friendly, including a separate race where owners run with their dogs. The distances are short enough – 2K, 4.5K and 9K – that you can still be a beginner trail runner and enjoy this race.

#3: Canadian Death Race

Date: August 3-6, 2018

Location: Grand Cache, Alberta

As you might have guessed by the name of this race, it’s not for the faint of heart. The 125K Canadian Death Race is considered one of the world’s most intense and challenging ultramarathon races. And if you are not convinced, just consider the tagline for the event: “It’s a killer.” There’s more about the race than just the 125K distance, though. For one, there are over 5,100 meters of elevation gain, so you will need your trail spikes. And, oh yeah, you also have to cross a major river. (Race participants carry a special coin that they then use to pay for safe passage.) If you’re not quite ready for the Death Race, there’s also the Near Death Marathon – shorter, simpler but no less deadly. This event needs to be on your calendar for ultra marathon 2018 races.

#4: Squamish 50

Date: August 18-19, 2018

Location: Squamish, British Columbia

I run because _______ @brianmccurdyphotography #SQ50 #squamish50

A post shared by Squamish 50 (@squamish50) on

This 50K trail race, which takes place approximately halfway between Vancouver and Whistler, is justly famous for its picturesque views. During the race, you’ll be able to soak in stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, as well as glaciers, peaks and Howe Sound. Most people fly in via Vancouver International Airport, making it one of the more accessible races for people across Canada. In fact, the race is famous for selling out within hours. There is a good reason for this popularity, including the fact that trail running legend Gary Robbins will be there to greet you at the finish line. If you’re in peak physical condition, you might consider doing the “50/50” – the 50K trail race followed by a 50-mile race on back-to-back days.

#5: Xtrail Mont Orford

Date: October 13, 2018

Location: Sherbrooke, Quebec

Xtrail Mont Orford

From the very beginning, you know what you are getting into with this trail race – it takes place at the base of a ski mountain. And it only goes straight up from there. If there was ever a race for trail spikes or shoe grips, this is it. You do have a variety of choices when it comes to race distance, though. While the lead event is the 23K climb to the top, there are also more family-friendly options, such as the 5K and the 11.5K.

#6: Broken Goat

Date: July 21, 2018

Location: Rossland, British Columbia

If you’re looking for an ultra running trail race amidst mountainous terrain, this 50K race is for you. You’ll race along nearly 45K of alpine singletrack and enjoy stunning wraparound views of surrounding peaks. The race, as you might expect, is quite challenging, so bring your nano crampons. You’ll need to summit two peaks before you even reach a first aid station. The good news, though, is that there is also a side-by-side 1K kids’ race, so you can bring the whole family.

#7: Canadian River Valley Revenge Ultra

Date: June 15-16, 2018; January 2019

Location: Edmonton, Alberta

Since there are both summer and winter versions of this race, the race organizers use the slogan “revenge is a dish best served twice.” The 100K race is what many refer to as an “urban ultra” – it takes place in Edmonton, but the singletrack and doubletrack trails will take you through forest terrain and along sheer cliffs. If you’re not quite ready for an ultra, there are beginner versions of this race at 5K and 25K.

#8: Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run

Date: July 14, 2018

Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia

Popularly known as one of the most challenging and intense races in North America, the Knee Knackering race will get your knees to knacker. This 48K race takes place along the Baden Powell Trail, set amidst Pacific Northwest rainforest. Overall, there are more than 5,000 meters of ascent and descent,.

#9: Run for the Toad

Date: September 29, 2018

Location: Paris, Ontario

This 50K race is one of the latest competitions of the summer season. It bills itself as “the perfect race for the entire family.” Entries are capped at 1,500 and trails are groomed wide enough for as many as three runners to race along each other at one time. Shorter versions of the race (12.5K, 25K) offer walking options.

#10: Yukon River Trail Marathon

Date: August 5, 2018

Location: Yukon Territory

If you’ve ever wanted to race along the Yukon River and explore the majestic beauty of Yukon Territory, this race is for you. For much of the course, you will be running either next to or above the Yukon River. The race will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.

**

As a tribute to just how many amazing trail races take place in Canada each year, there are some races that were left off this list – like the Fat Dog 120 in British Columbia, which was recently ranked one of the most ten most challenging ultras in the world by Outside magazine. And, of course, there are the local favorites – like the Dirty Feet Trail Series (sponsored by North Face) that have become very popular in recent years. So, no matter your running level or your distance preference, you are sure to find an ultra marathon Canada race that satisfies your inner recreationalist.

For example, the outer shell of the sock is made of durable nylon. This helps to reduce abrasion, itching and chafing. Next, there’s a unique waterproof, breathable membrane that allows perspiration to travel out, but not water to travel in. This ensures that your feet stay as dry as possible, even under wet conditions. Finally, there’s a wicker inner liner designed for comfort. This liner also works to eliminate moisture from your socks.

These Yatta Life socks are truly weatherproof socks as well as waterproof socks. They offer 100% water protection and are also specifically designed to create the perfect wind barrier. If you are investing in a windproof, weatherproof shell jacket, why wouldn’t you also invest in water resistant socks that can provide an extra layer of protection from harsh winds?

Yatta Life recognizes that the modern Recreationalist needs to be prepared for anything. Anyone who spends time in the Great Outdoors knows that weather can change at a moment’s notice. Thus, the sunny all-day hike to the summit of a mountain might quickly transform into a waterlogged, difficult scramble down to the base. That’s when you will want to make sure that you are wearing truly weatherproof socks that keep your feet warm.

These new Yatta Life men’s thermal socks are the best hiking socks on the market today. Waterproof and windproof, they are also breathable and flexible. In short, you are not giving up any comfort or fit in exchange for a weatherproof, impermeable layer between you and the outside world.

And, best of all, these Yatta Life waterproof socks come in two stylish designs: black and multicolor. Both have fun, fashion-forward prints on the soles of the socks, keeping them stylish even when you are indoors. Imagine walking around a winter ski lodge in these socks, or just curling up in front of a warm fire after a long day on the trail.

To fully enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, it’s important to use products with the perfect mix of functionality and attention to detail. That’s exactly what these Yatta Life Waterproof Socks deliver – they are the best hiking socks you can buy. These weatherproof and waterproof socks will keep you dry and comfortable, no matter how active you are and no matter the weather outside.
